Urban Mobility Index
Spring 2022Exploring Urban Data with Machine LearningColumbia GSAPPBy Kit Nga Chou, Kirthi Balakrishnan, Lizzie Lee, Michelle Chen︎Interactive Site

Project Scope:Addressing the critical issue of urban mobility, the prevalent reliance on vehicular transportation underscores the need for improving walkability or multi-modal commute options. A valuable tool for urban planners is to be able to assess a neighborhood’s walkability score by examining its street characteristics.
Exploring the potential, our team leveraged Walkscore.com's extensive datasets of major cities to construct a training model. This model seeks to predict the efficiency of any city or neighborhood based on their street connectivity and transit density, offering a comprehensive analytical approach for urban planning.

by Kit Nga Chou, Brady Meixell, Ariana Bon, Eryn Halvey

Project Scope:In the Land Use Planning course, our team established BEAK Consulting, a specialized planning firm based in New York. Our expertise lies in community development, where we employ a thorough assessment of urban interventions to champion bottom-up planning strategies.
Commissioned by the Town of Pink in Oklahoma, our role involved conducting comprehensive ArcGIS analyses to evaluate current environmental conditions. Informed by local community input, we meticulously integrated concerns to craft land use and development management plans, prioritizing goals centered around equity, such as increasing affordable housing stock and implementing multi-modal pilot programs.

Converted Housing: From Vacant Offices to Affordable Homes
	Spring 2022
Columbia GSAPP Urban Planning Studio

with Zhihao Bao, Christian Budow, Kimberly Cheung, Stacey Chui, Carlos Pereyra, Hazel Ni, Morgan Reuther, Daniel Wexler, Andrea Wong

Project Scope:In collaboration with the Citizens Housing and Planning Council, a prominent research and advocacy organization specializing in housing and planning matters in New York City, our studio embarked on a comprehensive project. Our focus involved in-depth research into the legislative framework of New York City's housing conversion policies, affordable housing programs, and architectural practices. The objective was to identify and address impediments hindering the efficient conversion of offices to hotels. Utilizing spatial data analysis, we narrowed our investigation to three distinct office buildings in New York City, each representing different typologies. This approach aimed to showcase the diverse potential conversion models and contribute valuable insights to the broader discourse on urban development.

	Is New York Family-Friendly?
	Fall 2021Geographical Information SystemsColumbia GSAPP
By Kit Nga Chou, Kirthi Balakrishnan, Mollye Liu
︎Read Full Final Report

Project Scope:The series of ArcGIS analyses comprehensively assessed neighborhoods in New York City for their family-friendliness while examining the spatial distribution of existing families. With over hundreds of thousands of families in the city grappling with the rising cost of living outpacing income growth, the need to understand the factors that contribute to a neighborhood's desirability for families is pressing.
The study focuses on evaluating accessibility and affordability elements, offering recommendations to enhance family-friendliness in specific neighborhoods. The primary audience for these recommendations includes the Community Districts of New York City, crucial stakeholders responsible for advising on land use and zoning within their respective districts.

	Public Transit in the Pandemic

Project Scope:
In this project, I investigated the impact of COVID-19 on Citi Bike usage in NYC and the equitable distribution of Citi Bike docking stations across the city, utilizing publicly available Citi Bike data. With Python, I conducted a comprehensive analysis and visualization of Citi Bike usage patterns before the pandemic, during the peak of the initial COVID wave, and as the city began to lift restrictions. The Python packages I utilized for this research included Pandas, Geopandas, Plotly, NetworkX, Matplotlib, and Seaborn.

My findings revealed a correlation between the decline in subway ridership in Manhattan and an upswing in Citi Bike usage, particularly in commercial areas like Midtown. However, this relationship was not observed in more residential neighborhoods such as the East Village. These insights shed light on the nuanced dynamics of transportation shifts during the various phases of the pandemic in different urban contexts.
